“They” say no one likes a tattle tale. Well that may be true with preschoolers, but when it comes to the really important things in life, those tales matter. Like when someone builds a deck the wrong way. Crank Waterproofing has been doing decks in Orange County for over 70 years. We’re the Orange County deck contractor that knows how to do it right. And when it’s not done right and watertight, disaster ensues. Just check these bad decks out.

Bad Deck Construction on So Many Levels

This deck job comes from New Haven Connecticut and it is bad on so many levels. Pun intended. Literally what the *(%&#) did they think they were doing?

What’s worse? Not only does this look like a pile of junk, it was built like a pile of junk as well.  A 2 x 8 was laid on the flat and asked to double as a beam. Except that a 2 x 8 is not a beam. Post set on piers (but not attached – because well whatever) were attached to the makeshift beam.

corrosive nails used on exterior work

The framing didn’t get better than the foundation – ledgers were nailed to the siding. And speaking of nails, you gotta love this:

It’s as if they thought you could make up for using corrosive nails by using a metric ton of them per square foot.

No, quantity doesn’t trump quality when it comes to the choice of hardware.  Any Orange County deck contractor that knows their business knows only noncorrosive nails outside please.

A Deck Add-On Should Stay Added On

Speaking of nails, when this deck was added on, it didn’t stay that way. Instead of using lag bolts, this defective deck contractor used nails and built a defective deck.

Lag bolts are some of the strongest and toughest fasteners designed by man. They are used to support heavy building materials and heavy loads. This deck qualified on both accounts. That’s why lag bolts should have been used instead of nails.

It’s hard to say more because the picture above really says it all. Compare it to the picture below.
