Sloping may be necessary to assist drainage. Ideally, it is performed at the time of the plywood installation.

Applying the Deck Waterproofing System

The Desert Crete system is a combination of metal lathe and strong layers of polymer-modified cement topped by a decorative waterproof surface. This unique, multiple layer approach creates a strong waterproof system that stands up to wear and tear.

Desert Crete starts with a plywood subfloor of at least 5/8″ inch. On this subfloor you install all slider and door thresholds, jambs, posts, deck edges, scuppers and fascia with galvanized metal flashing. Caulking and priming finish the subfloor prep. Once subfloor prep is finished, the metal lathe goes down and gets stapled in place.

The first layer consists of a polybase mixed with water and troweled in place. Fiberglass goes down on top of the first layer of polybase. A second polybase skim coat goes over the fiberglass. Building up the system in layers is one secret to the system’s strength.

Now it’s time to get decorative. If you want a textured, knock down finish, the texture goes down now. You can also stencil, stamp, or otherwise to create the final look you want. Just look at the stock colors available.

Lastly, two layers of sealer keep it watertight. Applied properly, you can expect 10 or more years of life from your Desert Crete surface.
