Got a concrete deck? Wish you had a tile deck? Don’t want to spend the money to take the concrete out and put tile in? You’re in good company. You’re also in luck. Crank Deck is the deck contractor located right here in Orange County and they’ve got artists that can resurface your concrete to emulate almost any surface. That includes tiles too!

deck coating finish looks like tileMicrotoppings are the Secret

Just looking at the picture above you would never know this was a plain, boring concrete deck. But Crank Waterproofing saw a blank canvass. And every artist lives for a blank canvass. The secret weapon? Microtoppings!

These thin layers of cement and polymer are more than just waterproofing materials. In the hands of an artist they are the palette to create any look you want.

In this instance, all the artist needed was some tape and the proper microtoppings and tints. The tape creates the grid laid down before the magic begins. When tinted microtoppings go down on top of the tape, the tape prevents the materials from adhering to the underlying concrete.  After the “tiles” are painted with the use of these microtoppings and the material has dried, it’s time to remove the tape. The tape comes up revealing the grey of the underlying concrete. Instant grout lines!

Want grout lines in another color? Then a tinted microtopping goes down first in the color of the desired “grout” line. Next, the tape creates the grid lines. Then it’s artist time to paint the tiles.

Waterproof and Beautiful

Once the microtopping is dry, its time to protect this piece of art. Because Crank Waterproofing knows deck protection, they know the right waterproof deck coating to apply.

This waterproof coating keeps the microtopping art watertight and will keep it looking new and fresh for years. Now the art is ready for foot traffic.

Bring it on!  The top coating will stand up to foot traffic, rain, ultraviolet light and even moving the furniture around. Crank does it right.

What Can You Imagine?

Don’t want standard tile patterns? Well don’t settle for standard square tiles.

Take a look at these rectangles. The process remains the same. The only difference is the art.  And you really need to think of this as art.

If you can imagine it, it can probably be created with microtoppings. But this isn’t a DIY project.
