Well, now that you are confined to your home, what are you going to do? After binging Netflix gets old and you’ve cleaned out all your closets, why not plan a home improvement project. After all, you’ve got nothing but time on your hands. Spend it wisely. Plan your deck construction project now and when the quarantine lifts you’ll be ready to spring into action for a Spring deck. Here are a few things to consider while planning that deck.

Make the Most of Your Space

You don’t need a huge amount of space to create an awesome outdoor living area. Not all decks are large wooden areas attached to the house. You can create a great place to relax at ground level even when space is limited. Check out how this design creates additional space that matches the attached deck area.

A concrete microtopping looks just like tile on the attached deck and completes the look in the grassy area. The two chairs are just far enough away from the building to provide a feeling of open space in a small area.

Don’t forget to look above for added space. Adding a balcony, deck, or even a roof deck is a great way to add space or make the most of the space you have.

Once complete, this deck construction project will add a shaded lower area and an upper sundeck. Railings on the upper deck won’t interfere with the view and will extend the feeling of space from the inside.

Research Your Decking Materials

Since you’ve got the time, do some research on the deck materials you want to use.  If you like the look of wood but want something that is quite durable and requires less maintenance than cedar, consider building with Ipe wood or composite decking like the Trex.  Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) is a very dense and tightly grained South American wood is naturally resistant to insects and dry rot. Composite decking like Trex uses wood fiber and plastics for an eco-friendly decking material that defies ultraviolet light and termites too.

Of course nothing beats wood for natural warmth.  It does need regular waterproofing, but so does everything else but Trex.  Wood for decks is less expensive up front than composite but will cost more in maintenance costs over the years.

One of the most cost-effective materials is concrete. It’s not only durable but it’s pretty easy to maintain. One of the great things about concrete is that it can be resurfaced when you are ready for a new  look.

Once you pick the materials for your deck construction project, it’s time to pick someone to do the job.

Research Your Deck Contractor

Now you’ve designed your deck, it’s time to figure out which deck contractor to hire.

Of course you want to hire a contractor with a good reputation, skilled craftsmen, and honesty.  Start by looking at Crank Deck and Roof and you won’t look further.  Since 1945, Crank has put their skills and experience to build new decks and waterproof existing decks.

Crank is a licensed general contractor. Adam and his crews build decks that are safe, functional,  and will look good and last for years. They also specialize in glass, wrought iron, vinyl, or traditional railings that preserve safety without ruining your view.
