Deck railings are an important safety feature for any deck. Installation is far from optional. The International Residential Code (IRC) sets standards for deck railings to prevent falls. Crank Deck sets the standard for deck railings that provide safety and beauty.
Glass Deck Railings
Immerse yourself in an uninterrupted view with glass deck railings. Whether you look over the ocean, the hills, or just the neighborhood enjoy the view.
Glass deck rails are more durable than you think. Most use 1/4″ thick tempered glass. That makes them strong and resistant to day-to-day wear.
Don’t let the initial price of glass rails scare you off. Because they won’t rust or corrode, they last. Hey, you don’t need to ever paint this railing either. You can’t say that for most other deck railing material.
Hybrid Railings
Take traditional wood or metal deck posts and replace the infill pickets with glass and you’ve got a hybrid.
You get the view without the infinity.
Top and sweep space are well defined and the contrast adds architectural interest. Using the infinity design on the deck above wouldn’t work. The space is too small. However, a hybrid is perfect.
The glass opens up the area while the white posts and caps add definition.
Traditional Railings with a Twist
Okay, IRC says you must have:
- 36″ high measured from deck surface to top of rail
- Infill that stops a 4″ sphere
- Rail posts at least every 6′
- Sweep space of 4″ or less
But, IRC doesn’t say your railings must be boring.
Mix things up. Use more than one color paint. Vary the size and shape of the infill pickets. Get interesting like the railings shown above.
Rods and posts provide visual interest because they utilize two different geographic shapes. Contrasting paint colors are not only artistic, they are camouflage. Dark paint disappears into the dark background so the eye only sees the white. But the white paint disappears into the light background and you only see the dark. Genius if you think about it.
