Deck Repair & Waterproof Deck Coatings in Orange County
Soft spots, dry rot, cracked or peeling coatings, or a new deck from scratch. We repair, rebuild and build decks, and finish them with a waterproof deck coating that holds up. Family-run in Costa Mesa since 1945.
A deck coating is only as good as what’s under it
A new coating over wet or rotted wood looks great for a season, then fails from the inside. Before we coat anything, we check the plywood, the framing, the flashing and the door threshold, and we fix what needs fixing.
Adam has installed more than 100,000 square feet of decking by hand. Our crews know what a deck looks like when it was done fast, and we’d rather do it once.
We don’t build on bad bones. If the wood underneath is wet or rotted, it gets fixed first.

What we do
Whether you want to build a new deck or need help with a well-used one, our team works on just about every kind of deck there is.
Waterproof deck coatings
Complete coating systems and recoats for wood and concrete decks, balconies and stairs. One manufacturer’s system, start to finish.
The Desert Crete system
A deck system made in California that waterproofs and can be finished to look like tile, stone or brick.
Deck repair
Weather and use catch up with every deck eventually. Whatever shape yours is in, we’ll get it back to solid and dry.
Dry rot and structural repair
Rotted plywood, joists and ledger boards replaced before the deck is sealed back up.
New decks and deck carpentry
Custom decks, rebuilds and composite decking, built so they can be waterproofed properly from day one.
Railings, stairs and walkways
New railings with posts sealed into the waterproofing, and coatings that make stairs and walkways safer underfoot.
Recoat or rebuild?
A recoat makes sense when the coating is worn but the deck underneath is dry and solid. If there are soft spots, rust at the posts or stains below, there’s usually damage under the surface, and that has to be fixed first.
We’ll tell you which one your deck needs, with photos of what we found.
A deck adds living space, and value
A deck is one of the most popular ways to improve a home in Orange County, because it lets you use the weather we have most of the year. Next to a pool, or looking out over the yard or the water, it becomes the room people actually spend time in.
It’s also something buyers here look for. Depending on the materials, a new deck can add more value than remodeling a room inside the house. What it costs depends on the size, the design and the materials, and we’ll walk you through the options in a free estimate.

Why homeowners choose Crank for their deck
Building a deck can look simple. Done without the right experience, it shows up later as water damage, loose railings or a deck that needs redoing. That’s why it pays to work with a licensed contractor that has done this a long time.
Crank has worked on Orange County decks since 1945. We’re licensed and insured, we don’t consider the job finished until it’s right and you’re happy with it, and you can read what our customers say. We work on decks across Orange County, including Santa Ana, San Clemente, Irvine, Anaheim and Newport Beach, and in Los Angeles.
Deck questions
How much does a deck coating or a new deck cost?
It depends on the size of the deck, what’s under the surface, the materials and the design. Estimates are free and come in writing, so you know the number before anything starts. We work hard to find an option that fits your budget.
Can you recoat my deck without tearing it out?
Often, yes. If the deck is dry and solid underneath, we prep the surface and recoat it. If we find rot or water damage, we’ll show you before quoting the repair.
Are decks easy to maintain?
Mostly. Clean the deck at least once a year, keep the drains clear, and shade helps against the sun. Watch for cracks in the coating, soft spots or rust at the posts. Catching those early keeps a recoat from turning into a rebuild.
Do you build new decks?
Yes, including custom and composite decks, and we build them with the waterproofing in mind from the start.
How soon can you start?
Once the estimate is approved and the agreement is signed, we schedule your job for the earliest date we can.
Should I hire a contractor or a handyman?
For a deck, and especially for waterproofing, a licensed contractor. A deck over living space is a roof, and a mistake shows up as water damage inside. Crank is a licensed California contractor, license #1038420.
